Rotating Drilling Heads

CATEC is an exclusive representative for a North America leading rotating drilling heads manufacturer for China market.
Rotating drilling heads divert potentially dangerous gas, dust or steam away from rig floor. Rotating Heads are essentially strippers which divert anything rising up the annulus safely away from the rig floor. Models are available for blowout preventer stacks from 6¡± through 20¡±, and for mounting directly to conductor pipe.
During drilling, tripping in or out, or at static intervals, these units provide a continuous seal-off on the Kelly, drill pipe, tool joints, or drill collars. Mud, dust, air, gas, or steam is diverted through a side outlet, thus keeping the crew and floor area safe.

APPLICATIONS
Rotating Heads are ideal for both air / gas or mud drilling using either conventional or reverse circulation. These units have proved successful in all types of drilling environments for years, and have helped broaden the use of air/gas as a circulation medium, controlled pressure, and reverse circulation.
A modified version is available for high-temperature work, and has over years of successful operation in geothermal wells.

In mud drilling, these heads are especially valuable in diverting gas-cut mud during kicks.
Please Note: The Rotating Drilling Head is a diverter and NOT a rotating blowout preventer.

Component Parts
The Rotating Head is generally the connecting link between the BOP stack and the rotary table. It is made up of four functional components, three of which rotate.
1. The body, which is essentially a drilling spool with a side outlet, is mounted to the stack and is stationary.
2. The Drive Ring assembly, which is integral to the body and is never removed during operation. This assembly contains the bearings, seals and lubrication ports.
3. The Bushing assembly, which mates with the Drive Ring and is removable. It includes a split Kelly Bushing., a Drive Bushing, and an attached Stripper Rubber.
4. Mud Slinger and Swing Bolt Clamp.

How It Works
The split Kelly Bushing is made up with a loose fit around the Kelly. When the Kelly is run in, this bushing automatically indexes itself inside the Drive Bushing. The rotary action of the Kelly turns the bushing. The bushing turns the Drive Bushing, and consequently, the attached Stripper Rubber.
When the Kelly is picked up, the shoulder on the lower Kelly upset lifts the bushing with it. This automatically disengages the bushing from the Drive Bushing, and the bushing remains with the Kelly in the rathole.

Model 8068
For 16¡± and 20¡± BOP stacks, and mounting directly to conductor pipe.
This model is a split-type in which the body has no integral side outlet or lower mounting flange, and is retained by four clamping dogs to either a separate spool or a conductor pipe mounting flange.

The split design offers wide versatility of mounting, and has the added advantage of allowing fast access to large-diameter bores by lifting the entire Rotating Head through a 27 1/2¡± table.

Interchangeable Parts:
Like all Rotating Heads, the drive bushing assembly is removed from the body using the convenient swing bolt clamp. This provides a 13 1/4¡± opening and easy change of stripper rubbers. All parts and assemblies are interchangeable with the Model 7068.

Model 7068
For 10¡±, 12¡±, and 13 5/8¡± BOP stacks.

This model has an integral body with both side outlet and a lower API flange for mounting on the top of BOP stacks.

The 10¡±size is available in a standard and ¡°Shorty¡± version. The ¡°Shorty¡±, 7068-S, is approximately 30% shorter than the standard, an advantage in stacks where there is limited space beneath the table.

All heads have full bores when the drive bushing assembly is removed. The drive bushing assembly will pass a 17 1/2¡± table, and is interchangeable with Model 8068.

Model 7368
For 6¡± BOP stacks.

This ultra-compact model is only 23 7/8¡± in height, and is ideal for workover jobs, shallow wells and slim holes.

Although smaller in size, this model utilizes the same basic design and operating principles as the larger models. The removal of the one piece drive bushing stripper rubber from the head provides a full bore of 7 1/16¡± and will pass through a 10 1/2¡± table.

CHOICE OF LUBRICATING SYSTEMS

All Rotating Drilling Heads are furnished with a separate, pressurized lubrication system. There are three systems from which to choose:
1. 17-gallon re-circulating (furnished with each head unless otherwise specified).
2. 17-gallon non-circulating (recommended for extremely cold or freezing climates)
3. 55-gallon re-circulating (The manufacturer furnishes plate assembly to fit customer¡¯s drum).
